Colin Muir Dorward's work is painted from life. He uses his visible surroundings to provide the colours and forms that make up the pictures. As such, they are suffused with the people, spaces, land, and things around him - they are marked by the flow of his life. Quotidian joys and pains, private meditations, and political agendas are all present.

Colin Muir Dorward has led an itinerant life. He spent childhood in Singapore, was raised in Edmonton, and obtained his BFA from Emily Carr University in 2007. He was selected as a finalist in the 2012 RBC Painting Competition, and won Honorable Mention in the 2013 competition - the same year he completed his MFA at the University of Ottawa. In the fall of 2014, he was awarded the Robert and Isabel Pope Painter’s Residency at NSCAD University. He has exhibited across Canada at venues including The National Gallery of Canada, SAW Gallery, Carleton University Art Gallery, The Power Plant, and The Anna Leonowens Gallery. His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Yukon Permanent Art Collection, the RBC Corporate Art Collection and the City of Ottawa Art Collection. Dorward entered the PhD in Visual Art and Culture program at University of Western Ontario in the fall of 2015.
